One year 'no bull' warranty

Don't get burned by cheap "suppliers"

Plenty of engines sold as "new" or "remanufactured" are worn cores with fresh seals and a coat of paint. Ours are built from new components only, hot tested before dispatch with QR-linked video proof, and carry a written warranty handled by our own team.

What makes Crate Engines the best choice?
  • Brand new, never rebuilt – zero kilometres
  • Known factory weak points engineered out
  • No exchange or core charge – keep your old engine
  • GST and entry fees payable to NZ Customs on arrival – no surprise fees on arrival
  • Real people who know engines, Australian owned since 2017

Brand new Triton 4M40 engine — 2.8L four-cylinder diesel for the Mitsubishi Triton, 1998–2006, in turbo and non-turbo. Delivered anywhere in New Zealand.

The 4M40 Triton problem

These utes were bought to work and most of them did. By now the engines are worn rather than broken: compression is down, they smoke on start-up, they use oil and the power is simply not there under load. The other common ending is a cracked head after an overheat — cooling systems on a working ute get neglected, and the 4M40 head does not forgive it twice.

Tritons of this era are cheap to buy and expensive to replace with anything equivalent, so a new engine in a straight, rust-free ute is usually the sensible call.

Turbo block or non-turbo block — choose above

Match the option to the engine the vehicle has now; the two blocks are different. Send us the VIN or engine number if you are unsure and we will check it at no charge.

One thing to confirm: the product title covers 1998–2006, while our older detailed specification is written for 1998–2003. Contact us to confirm a 2004–2006 application before ordering.

What you receive

A new long block: assembled cylinder head, block, crankshaft, pistons and rods. Timing components are not included. Inspect and transfer the suitable bolt-on components from your original engine and fit new timing parts, fluids, filters and seals.

Not the same as the 4D56 or the 4N15

Earlier Tritons ran the 4D56 2.5L and the 2015-on MQ and MR run the 4N15 2.4L. We list both separately. If your engine number is not a 4M40, you are on the wrong page.

New, not reconditioned

Zero kilometres, no unknown history, no core exchange. 1-year warranty on manufacturing and assembly faults; professional installation required.

Delivery to New Zealand

Flat freight NZ$710 North Island, NZ$790 South Island, GST-exclusive, crated and insured, typically 5–8 business days door to door. Prices exclude GST; New Zealand Customs collects GST and entry fees on arrival.

Know what you're buying

New vs reconditioned crate engines

Plenty of engines sold into New Zealand are old, patched motors with new seals, called "remanufactured". Here's the honest difference with a brand new crate engine.

What we sell

Brand new crate engine

Built from new components only, to OEM+ specification, with the known factory weak points engineered out.

  • Forged steel crankshaft, upgraded pistons, improved oil galleries
  • Zero kilometres — no unknown history, no wear
  • Hot tested with QR video proof on every engine
  • Heat tabs fitted for transparent warranty coverage
  • 1-year warranty standard, 2–3 year Platinum available
  • No exchange required — keep your old engine

The old way

Reconditioned / used

A worn core with new seals and gaskets — the internals, and the history, are whatever they are.

  • Unknown kilometres, service history and prior abuse
  • Original worn internals retained under new gaskets
  • Rarely tested before sale — you're the test
  • Core charges and exchange units required
  • Typical warranty: 3 months, if any
  • Early failures inherit the old engine's problems
The gamble — often only marginally cheaper

Before you fit it

Plan the job around the whole vehicle

A new engine only lasts if the reason the old one failed is fixed. Your mechanic should check these before fitting.

01

Find the original cause

Overheating, cooling faults, blocked intakes or fuel issues that killed the old engine will kill the new one too. Diagnose and fix them first.

02

Check the parts you reuse

Radiator, hoses, injectors, turbo, intercooler and sensors carried over from the old engine should be inspected, cleaned or replaced.

03

Follow the fitting requirements

Fitted by a qualified mechanic with a tax invoice, correct fluids and a proper first start-up. This keeps your warranty active.

Engine replacement FAQs

Not sure this is the right engine? Send us your VIN or engine code and we'll confirm fitment before you pay.

Is this engine brand new?

Yes. Built from new components only — not reconditioned, not second-hand, zero kilometres.

What's included with the engine?

This is a long block. Accessories such as the turbo, injectors, pumps, sensors and manifolds are transferred from your existing engine unless listed otherwise. Check the description or ask us if unsure.

Will I pay GST or customs fees on delivery?

Yes. Prices are in NZD excluding GST. When the engine arrives, NZ Customs collects 15% GST plus an import entry transaction fee and biosecurity levy (around NZ$172 combined) before it is released. Engines are duty-free. You pay those charges directly to Customs, not to us.

How long does delivery to New Zealand take?

The estimated delivery window is shown next to the Add to cart button. We'll send tracking as soon as your engine is dispatched.

How does the warranty work?

1-year warranty covering manufacturing and assembly faults, with 2 and 3-year Platinum cover available. Installation by a qualified mechanic with a tax invoice is required to activate cover.

Do I need to send my old engine back?

No. No core charge and no exchange — keep or sell your old engine.
